Jacob’s Well is a perennial spring located in Hays County, Texas, near the towns of Dripping Springs and Wimberley. This site is a popular tourist attraction due to its striking scenic beauty...the clear, cold water that issues from the Trinity Aquifer and flows into Cypress Creek is a favorite summertime swimming hole for both local residents and area visitors. However, unknown to some, beyond the inviting, sunlit waters that countless people enjoy is an extensive underwater cave system.
This system is comprised of a principal conduit (A Tunnel) that generally trends in a northwesterly direction from the spring opening and extends approximately 4,500 feet from the surface. The A Tunnel segment consists of two deep sections separated by a shallower central portion. The deepest point (137 feet) in the entire system occurs in the first deep section. A second, smaller conduit (B Tunnel) branches from the main passage and trends in a northerly direction for approximately 1,500 feet while maintaining a fairly constant depth. These conduits are the result of dissolution and erosion of soft, porous limestone strata that include the Lower Glen Rose, Hensel, and Cow Creek formations. Deposits of clay, chert, and gravel are interspersed throughout the cave.
Temperature of the water in Jacob’s Well remains a near-constant 68°F and visibility is typically excellent. The spring provides habitat to numerous species of fish (principally sunfish and perch); turtles; aquatic insects; crustaceans; and, most notably, the cave-adapted Fern Bank salamander (Eurycea pterophilia). Discharge from the spring has historically been noted to be constant, and, at times, even prolific. In the past, visitors often reported observing a ‘dome’ of water up to several feet in height over the spring’s opening. According to the Houston Chronicle, at least 12 people have died trying to explore the treacherous waters, making it the prime haunting grounds for restless spirits who met a tragic end. None were certified cave divers with the proper equipment, said Gregg Tatum, Jacob's Well Exploration Project director.
It was the first time since 2000 that the well lost water flow. In late 2023, Hays County officials were worried that Jacob's Well might never return to normal. Harsh droughts brought the well to the brink of no return, damaging ecosystems and local economies.
Low water levels forced Jacob's Well to close to swimmers. Now Blue Hole is closed, too. Drought and water scarcity in Wimberley have claimed a second victim. First, it was Jacob's Well, and now Blue Hole's water levels are two feet below the normal level.
But it's likely to be only a temporary respite. Once a perennial spring that kept flowing even during extreme droughts, Jacob's Well has been drying up with increasing frequency over the last two decades thanks to drought and overpumping.
Only permitted cave diving research professionals are now allowed to dive Jacob's Well. Their effort has charted the cave system to nearly 140 feet deep and almost a mile in length!

So don't be scared. Jacob's Well was a simple but beautiful treasure. The exterior of the Church was picturesque and the interior well is so historic. You can drink water from a well that Jesus drank from.
The fourth chamber is perhaps the most dangerous since it involves squeezing through a very narrow passageway. Two young Texas men were caught in one of the well's caves and drowned in 1979, another diver's remains were flushed out of the well in 1981, and there have been other fatalities until 2000.
Hays County purchased Jacob's Well Natural Area in 2010 with voter-approved park bond funds. The Parks Department is working to restore, protect and preserve the natural area for the public to enjoy. The Cultural and natural heritage of Jacob's Well has made if an integral part of the Wimberley experience.
Tears of the Turtle Cave is located in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in western Montana and is currently the deepest known limestone cave in the United States since passing New Mexico's Lechuguilla cave in 2014. As of August 2022, the cave is known to be 2,052 feet (625 m) deep and 1.488 miles (2,395 m) long.

The Samaritan woman told Jesus that 'the well is deep' (John 4:11) and indeed it is as it goes down over 70 feet (20 metres) and is still producing clear, chilled water for drinking which pilgrims are encouraged to drink and to take water back home with them.
