Medium Boiled Eggs

Medium-boiled eggs are boiled eggs that has a slightly firm yolk with a little bit of run in it, similar to that of an over-medium fried egg. The whites on a medium-boiled egg are firm like a hard-boiled egg. These eggs are for folks who want a completely cooked white and a slightly runny yolk. This is the internal temperature in which I prefer when eating boiled eggs.

How Long Does It Take to Medium Boil an Egg?

To achieve a perfect medium-boiled egg, the egg should be cooking in rolling boiling water for 7-9 minutes. Within this range of cooking time, the whites will be cooked. It is always vital to immediately chill the eggs. So that they stop cooking.

Thank you for this and the accompanying video on the technique for all three types! These came out perfect the first time. I’ve always had trouble doing boiled eggs and then peeling them and this time the shell came off like butter.

            FAQs

How long do you boil an egg for it to be medium boiled? ›

Egg times. Soft-boiled eggs: For soft, runny yolks, you want to make sure to remove the eggs at 4 minutes. Medium-boiled yolks: Often described as “jammy”, this is where my preference is, right around 6-7 minutes. Hard-boiled eggs: The range for hard-boiled yolks is anywhere from 8 to 12 minutes.

Why add baking soda to boiling eggs? ›

            Baking Soda

According to our friends at Delish, adding a teaspoon of baking soda to your boiling pot of water will help the shell peel off seamlessly. Why? The alkaline in the baking soda will help your egg whites loosen up from the shell, making it easier to peel.

Is it 3 minutes for a soft boiled egg? ›

The short answer is that it takes six minutes to soft boil an egg with fully set white and a liquid yolk, or 3-5 minutes if you prefer softer, slightly unset whites near the yolk. The long answer is that the time for soft boiled eggs also depends on the size of your egg and the technique used to boil the egg.

Do you hard boil eggs before or after the water boils? ›

You might have heard that you should drop your eggs into room temperature or cold water and then bring the water to a boil. This is a myth. In our tests, bringing the water to a boil first and then lowering the eggs into the bath made for easy peeling and more accurate timing.

Why do you put vinegar in water to boil eggs? ›

The vinegar in the water makes the eggs easier to peel. Here's why: The vinegar's acid not only dissolves some of the calcium carbonate in the shell, it also helps the whites set faster. Running the hard-boiled eggs under cold running water as you're peeling, meanwhile, helps the shell separate from the membrane.

Why do people put salt in water when boiling eggs? ›

People add salt to a pot of water before boiling eggs for a few reasons. First, salt helps water reach its boiling point faster, which means the eggs boil at a higher temperature. Second, salt helps seal cracks that may develop as eggs bounce around in bubbling water.

What is a boiled egg without the shell called? ›

Do you love hard-boiled eggs, but hate peeling off the shell? Skip the peeling and poach your eggs until the yolk is hard. Simmer water with 2 Tbsp. distilled vinegar and poach the eggs for 11–13 minutes.

How do you know when boiled eggs are done? ›

To determine whether an egg is hard boiled or raw, spin it! If it spins round and round evenly, it is hard boiled. If it wobbles while spinning, it is a raw egg.

How do you know if you boiled eggs long enough? ›

            Spin the egg.

The quickest way to distinguish between an uncooked egg and a solid boiled egg is to put it flat on the counter and spin it. A raw egg will wobble and spin slowly, because it's filled with liquid, while a boiled egg will spin very quickly and very easily.

How does Martha Stewart make hard-boiled eggs? ›

Carefully place the eggs in a large saucepan; add cold water to cover by one inch, and bring to a rolling boil. Cover pan; remove from heat. Let stand 12 minutes, then drain and rinse under cool water. To store, keep eggs unpeeled in the refrigerator, up to 4 days.

How long to boil an egg so it's not runny? ›

Gently lower in fridge-cold eggs. Lower the heat slightly – so the eggs don't crack due to being bashed around but water is still at a gentle boil. Start the timer – 6 minutes for runny yolks, 8 minutes for soft boiled, 10 minutes for classic hard boiled, 15 minutes for unpleasant rubbery whites and powdery dry yolks.

Is 12 minutes enough to boil an egg? ›

Cover the pan and quickly bring the water just to boiling. Turn off the heat and let the eggs stand, covered, 12 minutes for medium-size eggs, 15 minutes for large eggs and 18 minutes for extra-large eggs.

How do you know when an egg is medium boiled? ›

Medium-boiled eggs have a jammy yolk with a firm white. Add them to your favorite ramen or rice bowls. Soft-boiled eggs have a runny yolk with a set yet tender white.

How do you know when a egg is fully boiled? ›

The Spin. To test this popular trick, I laid both eggs on a smooth, flat surface and gave them a light spin. The boiled egg spun quickly, smoothly, and without any wobble.
