The Real-TimeStreaming Protocol (RTSP)[RFC2326] is used fortransferring real-time multimedia data, including audio and video, between aserver and a client. It is a streamingprotocol, which means it attempts to facilitate scenarios in which themultimedia data is being simultaneously transferred and rendered; that is,video is displayed, and audio is played.
The entity that sends the RTSP request that initiates thesession is referred as the client, and the entity that responds to that requestis referred to as the server. Typically, the multimedia data flows from theserver to the client. RTSP also allows multimedia data to flow in the oppositedirection. However, the extensions defined in this specification were notdesigned for such scenarios.
Clients can send RTSP requests to the server requestinginformation on contentbefore a session is established. The information that the server returns isformatted by using a syntax specified by the Session Description Protocol(SDP)[RFC4566].
Clients use RTSP requests to control the session and torequest that the server perform actions, such as starting or stopping the flowof multimedia data. Each request has a corresponding RTSP response that is sentin the opposite direction. Servers can also send RTSP requests to clients, forexample, to inform them that the session state has changed.
If TCP is used to exchange RTSP requests and responses, themultimedia data can also be transferred over the same TCP connection.Otherwise, the multimedia data is transferred over UDP.
This specification defines extensions to RTSP, SDP, RTP, andRTCP that enable the delivery of multimedia data that is encapsulated in Advanced Systems Format (ASF)packets [ASF].

This typically happens when a user attempts to utilize an IP camera with a third-party recorder.
The best way to determine if an IP camera supports RTSP is to check the specifications and user manual provided by the manufacturer. Look for terms like “RTSP,” “streaming protocols,” or “video streaming.”

Example URL: rtsp://admin:12345@192.168.1.210:554/Streaming/Channels/101 will bring up mainstream for channel 1, where admin is the username and 12345 is the password.
