Reimagining a Classic: Hedda's Personal Touch
Hedda isn't just another film for DaCosta; it's a deeply personal endeavor. She wrote the script years ago, and the story of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler kept haunting her. With a bold twist, DaCosta reimagines the title character as a queer, mixed-race Black woman, setting the story in a 1950s English manor. It's a daring move that adds a unique layer to the classic play.

The film follows Hedda, played by the talented Tessa Thompson, through a wild and unsettling night. DaCosta explains her choice of setting: "Post-War England mirrors our modern age's turmoil. History helps me process the cyclical nature of humanity's horrors. The conflicts of the '50s, a reaction to trauma, fascinated me."

Reimagining Ibsen's Character: DaCosta shares, "I wanted diverse visions of Black women in media. Having Tessa Thompson as a friend and collaborator, I assumed she'd be perfect as Hedda. From then on, I knew Hedda had to be a Black, mixed-race woman."
Escaping into Art: Growing up, DaCosta's parents divorced, and she found solace in art, books, and movies. "Curiosity is a powerful quality, and it drove me to explore and escape into different worlds. It was a way to cope with trauma."
The Appeal of Horror: Directing Candyman, DaCosta explains, "Horror allows you to push boundaries. Audiences expect an extreme experience, so you can be more confrontational. It's like a roller coaster; they know what they're signing up for."
Learning from Legends: Working as a production assistant for Steven Soderbergh, Steve McQueen, and Martin Scorsese taught DaCosta the importance of leadership. "Everything comes from the top. Soderbergh's sets were respectful, McQueen's gentle yet honest, and Scorsese's pursuit of perfection was inspiring."
Uncompromising Vision: Educated in predominantly white institutions, DaCosta learned the impact of being a Black woman. "In Hollywood's white space, I've had to be uncompromising. As I've grown, I've realized that sometimes a hard 'no' is necessary, even if it's perceived as aggressive. My focus is on the work, not on being liked."
