Providence is the final boss in Risk of Rain Returns. In this guide, we will give you a comprehensive guide to walk you through each phase of the fight so you can finally beat the final boss and roll the credits.
How to Beat Providence
Field Notes: I recognized him from the security footage... he was the one who blew the cargo hatches open. He was the one who killed everyone.

Providence, as I came to call him, moved faster and with more purpose than anything else I've seen on this planet. He must command great power, for he seemed to easily control two great gilded wurms of a species similar to the Magma Worm. Is he able to command everyone on this planet? I don't know his purpose, or his reasoning, but he did not give me a choice. I had to kill him... so why do I feel like I made a terrible mistake?
...Why did we have a teleporter from this planet in our cargo hold?

Attack Patterns
The battle with Providence takes place over four phases. The first stage features two main attacks. A teleporting attack where Providence appears on top of you and thrusts toward the ground with his sword, and a series of physical attacks that send off shock waves. To avoid these attacks, shift out from underneath him when he appears on top of you and jump over the shockwaves.
In addition to those attacks, Providence will also send out a series of blue projectiles and rings that show where his attacks are set to detonate. Avoid these by shifting out of their way before they’re set off.
Once you have whittled Providence’s first health bar to zero, he will summon two giant serpent-like creatures called Gilded Wurms. These are best tackled the same way you have defeated the Magma Worm boss previously.
Both Wurms have separate attacks. The red one shoots a laser that you can anticipate by the markings on the ground, and the blue one sends projectiles your way that you can jump over or shift through to avoid.
After defeating both of Providence’s Gilded Wurms, you will move on to phase three. Phase three of the boss fight is comparable to phase one, but there is an extra attack where Providence spawns doubles of himself to attack you using the same tactics from phase one.

When Providence appears in phase three, he also brings two robot sentinels to the fight. We recommend removing these threats as soon as possible so you can focus your energy on defeating Providence rather than dodging their attacks as well.
After depleting his health bar for the third time, there will be a small reprieve of a couple of seconds before Providence returns stronger than ever. As if the battle wasn’t hectic enough in the first three phases, the fourth one features bright green laser beams that slowly move across the map, taking up a lot of your valuable space and absolutely decimating your HP if you get caught in them.
These lasers are hard to avoid, but doing so is essential to making it through the last and final stage of the boss fight.
