Set up Find My on Mac (1)

You can set up Find My on your Mac so you can locate it and protect it if it’s ever lost or stolen. You can also share your location with others and find your Apple devices and items.

Note: When you add your Mac to Find My, Activation Lock is automatically turned on.

Turn on Location Services

Turn on Location Services to allow Find My to determine your location.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu Set up Find My on Mac (2)> System Settings, then click Privacy & Security Set up Find My on Mac (3) in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)

  2. Click Location Services on the right.

  3. Turn on Location Services, then turn on Find My in the list of apps.

    Note: If you don’t see Find My, go to System Services in the list of apps, click Details, then turn on Find My Mac.

Turn on Find My Mac

Turn on Find My Mac in iCloud settings so you can locate, lock, or erase your Mac.

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu Set up Find My on Mac (4)> System Settings, then click [your name] at the top of the sidebar. If you don’t see your name, click “Sign in with your Apple ID” to enter your Apple ID or to create one.

    Tip: If you forgot your Apple ID password, see the Apple Support article If you forgot your Apple ID password.

  2. Click iCloud on the right, then click Find My Mac. (If Find My Mac isn’t in the list, click Show All.)

    If the Find My icon has a warning badge Set up Find My on Mac (5), turn on Location Services first.

  3. Click Turn On, then click Allow when asked to allow Find My Mac to use the location of your Mac.

  4. Optionally, turn the Find My network on or off.

    The Find My network is an encrypted, anonymous network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices that can help you locate your device, even when it’s offline.

  5. Click Done.

    Note: If you set up your Mac with multiple user accounts, Find My Mac can only be used by one user at a time.

Tip: If you’re part of a Family Sharing group and you set up location sharing with a family member before your Mac is lost or stolen, that person can help you locate it.

You can remove your device from Find My at any time.

Note: Location sharing and finding devices aren’t available in all countries or regions.
