What happens if I lose it? When you set up your security key, you also set up backup methods you can use in case you lose your key. These include an authenticator app that lives on your phone, and a set of printed one-time recovery codes.
How do I recover my Google security key? ›
- Sign in to your Google Account with your password and your other second step.
- Follow the steps to remove the lost key from your account.
- Get a new security key. You may want to get an extra key you can keep in a safe place.
- Add the new key to your account.
As long as you've updated Google Authenticator and it's connected to your Google account, you can restore Authenticator from the cloud. If you aren't backing up Authenticator, you can manually transfer your accounts to a new device or restore using your QR code.
How do I reset my security key password? ›
If your security key is locked due to multiple incorrect PIN entries and must be reset:
- On your computer, open Chrome .
- At the top right, click More .
- Click Settings Privacy and security Security Manage security keys Reset your security key.
- Follow the instructions on screen.

Viewing the setup key
While setting up an authenticator app for 2FA you can view the setup key which we automatically generate as a QR code, but which can also be read in plain text by clicking on View setup key. It is sometimes also referred to as a "backup code" or "secret seed code".
