Thirty-six years before Top Gun: Maverick became the biggest box office success of 2022, there was Top Gun...the highest-grossing movie of 1986. The original Top Gun — about a hotshot naval officer and his experiences attending the titular fighter weapons school — boasted a wide selection of stars who would continue to have thriving careers in the years to come. In addition to star Tom Cruise, the cast includes Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt, and Michael Ironside, who each led fascinating careers following the success of the film.

In the years since his initial turn as Top Gun's famed aviator, Cruise only became more of a star.
