During National Preparedness Month, Montgomery County urges residents to prepare for disasters. Part of that effort includes creating and updating your Emergency Kit.
Along with the items listed on our Emergency Kit checklist (PDF), this year brings the added challenge of preparing for COVID-19.
We recommend adding these items to your emergency kit:
COVID-19 Preparedness Kit
- Face coverings (at least two per individual)
- Hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol)
- Medical ID card
- Sanitizing wipes
- Soap and water, if possible
- Thermometer
Quarantine Kit
If you suspect you have COVID-19, or receive a positive test, you may need to quarantine for 14 days with little or no notice. Preparing now for that possibility will help you have peace of mind should you become affected.
- Develop your plan
- Know the signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
- To have children and/or pets taken care of.
- To be able to quarantine from your family to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
- Information about resources available to you (from primary care providers, Montgomery County, local non-profits, etc.)
- Develop a support network of family members, friends, or close neighbors that can assist you.
- Gather a shelf-stable food supply
- Set aside shelf-stable food to be able to shelter in place or quarantine for 14 days. See food assistance resources.
- Be sure to consider your family’s dietary needs when putting aside food.
- Foods that should be considered include
- clean drinking water
- canned fruits, vegetables, and legumes
- canned soups or stews
- canned or dehydrated meats
- dry pasta
- dried fruits
- crackers
- granola bars
- shelf-stable beverages
- freeze dried meals
- Compile other supplies
- Trash bags
- Prescription medications
- Over-the-counter medications, such as fever reducers
- Facial Tissues
- Gloves
