Why US markets are closed? ›

Stock market holidays are non-weekend business days when the two major U.S. stock exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, are closed for the day. These days often closely follow federal holiday schedules and include major holidays like Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

The NYSE is open from Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern time. The NYSE may occasionally close early, either on a planned or unplanned basis. In such cases, The Standard will process transaction requests received prior to the close of the NYSE.

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower Friday, with the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite falling into correction as investors fretted over a softer-than-expected jobs report. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 610.71 points, or 1.5%, to close at 39,737.26.

Year-to-date (YTD) performance refers to the change in price since the first day of the current year. For example, if a stock ends the previous calendar year trading for $50 per share and is worth $60 at the end of June, the return (assuming the stock paid no dividends) is $10 or 20%.
