Background[]

The White Glove Society is a former Vault tribe employed by Robert House to run and maintain the Ultra-Luxe casino and hotel.[1][Non-game 1] The tribe signed a contract to turn away from their tribal identity, agreeing not to engage in cannibalism, and in turn, Mr. House agreed not to divulge their tribe's former name.[2][3] Their hotel is an establishment of refinement and its operators change the subject if visitors inquire about their past.[4][5]

Organization[]

The White Glove Society pampers its clients and provides the Strip's most elite casino experience. The dress code is strictly enforced. All staff and family members are well-dressed, well-spoken, and well-behaved. The White Glove Society are headed up by Marjorie[6][7] who also serves as manager of the casino's meat-oriented restaurant, the Gourmand. Mortimer serves as the hotel manager and works the front desk of the Ultra-Luxe.[8]

Mortimer's position in the casino also gives him the responsibility of finding suitable candidates within the hotel and casino to abduct, provided the White Glove Society is brought back to cannibalism. Philippe is The Gourmand's chef and creator of the Ultra-Luxe's infamous steaks. Succulent and delicious, a variety of meats are available, but only to the most discerning (and sponsored) Society member.[Non-game 2]

White Gloves wear formal wear or White Glove Society attire, and most wear a White Glove Society mask and are armed with a dress cane. Two flamers are being used in the kitchen basem*nt to cook brahmin for the Members Only area.

Relations with the outside[]

The White Glove Society sees itself above the common people of the Mojave Wasteland. They claim to eat only the finest foods and wear the best clothing available in the wasteland. They do not allow just anyone to join them, in order to join the White Glove Society, one must have a notable member willing to sponsor them. They are also allegedly the ones who control the food supply of the Strip.[9]

Interactions with the player character[]

By 2281, some members of the White Gloves, led by Mortimer developed a desire to return to the cannibalism that denoted their tribe. They indulged their dark craving in secret, even from the rest of the Society, by abducting healthy, well-fed individuals, often from Outer Vegas and specifically people whose disappearance would not be significant.

By the time the Courier arrives on the Strip, the situation has gotten tense. A botched abduction resulted in the targeted individual escaping and seeing the faces of the kidnappers, forcing a hasty substitution. Unfortunately, they chose to abduct Ted Gunderson, son of the wealthy and notoriously crooked brahmin baron, Heck Gunderson from his room at the Ultra-Luxe, bringing his father's attention to the Society. Here starts the quest Beyond the Beef.

A Courier aligned with Caesar's Legion and who is Idolized by the White Glove Society can leverage their Fame into asking Majorie to accept an alliance with Caesar, though no direct support manifests during the Second Battle of Hoover Dam.

Notes[]

  • When walking by a White Glove, one may remark, "You mustn't ask why we wear our masks, we are forbidden to speak of it." When the Courier asks Rotface, he says that people say they used to be an all-ghoul gang, but their actual purpose is simply maintaining a mysterious atmosphere, as revealed by Chauncey.[10][11]
  • Billy Knight makes reference to them involving a joke about cannibalism and a clown during his performance at the Tops' Aces theater.[12]
  • Cannibals or individuals with a high Speech skill will have extra dialogue options with Mortimer to help frame Heck Gunderson for his son's murder during Beyond the Beef.[13][14]
  • Completing the Beyond The Beef quest using the investigator's path and convincing Heck Gunderson to back down will improve reputation with the White Glove Society to be Idolized.
    • Note that if Beyond the Beef is completed in a way that turns the White Glove members hostile, the bank teller is included, but the latter does not respawn after death.
  • The White Glove Society is the only family on the Strip that the Courier can have a reputation with.
  • Marjorie states that the White Gloves did eat people, but they went by a different name and during a different time. Indeed the Society is so concerned with suppressing their past they wrote a clause into their contract with Mr. House preventing him mentioning their former name to anyone.[4]

Appearances[]

The White Glove Society appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

  • During the development of Fallout: New Vegas, the White Glove Society was originally named the Sawneys.[Non-game 3]
  • The White Gloves were written by Eric Fenstermaker.[Non-game 4]

Bugs[]

White Glove Society (1) Upon finishing Beyond the Beef, Mortimer may have no more commentary. However, a quest note will repeatedly pop up saying to speak to Mortimer for more info on the White Glove Society, which cannot be accomplished, unless he is resurrected and then talked to via console.[verified]

  1. The Courier: "What do you know of the White Glove Society?"
Caesar: "There were tales once, of a cannibal tribe near Vegas, one that hid itself in a cavern far below ground, hunting men as prey above. The scouts I occasionally sent west many years ago reported these tales, but never had contact. Well, except the ones who went missing, perhaps. There are rumors that the White Gloves might be this lost tribe. Maybe you can help them find themselves."
    (Caesar's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "Did you know some of the White Gloves are... eating people again?"
Robert House: "No, I was not aware of this. Is it really so hard not to engage in cannibalism? My goodness... It's a violation of their contract. I authorize you to deal with them in any way you see fit."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "Did you know I killed some White Gloves who were eating their customers?"
Robert House: "Cannibalism was strictly forbidden in their contract. If some of them broke that stricture, they deserved whatever punishment you dealt them."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 Courier: "What were the original names of the other tribes?"
Robert House: "The Chairmen, as we know them now, went by the unfortunate appellation of the "Mojave Boot-Riders." They were nomads, too. As for the White Glove Society, I afraid I'm contractually obligated not to reveal their original name."
    (Robert House's dialogue)
  5. Courier: "Were you aware that the White Glove Society used to be cannibals?"
Robert House: "Yes, of course. But refraining from those 'dietary practices' is a primary requirement of their contract. They've been good to their word. Put together one hell of a resort hotel, too. From what I hear, I'd want to eat at the Gourmand every night... if I were ambulatory."
    (Mr. House's dialogue)
  6. The Courier: "Do you work here?"
Marjorie: "I do, but one can hardly call it work. I think of myself as a caretaker rather than a common laborer. I suppose it is a labor of love if it can be called labor at all. We at the White Glove Society are all responsible for maintaining the beauty and class of the Ultra-Luxe. And as its founder I suppose it falls to me to decide how we go about it."
    (Marjorie's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "What can you tell me about your organization?"
Mortimer: "My, such a popular question. I suppose it is only natural to see us and wonder what it is that makes us special. The White Glove Society has only just made itself known to the public, of course, but our pedigree was established over generations. Were we always so refined? I'd be lying if I said yes. But I've always felt we were destined for a place atop modern society. And now, here we are. Not everyone can wear the finest clothes and eat the finest foods, obviously. That's just the reality we live in. But surely we can agree that the most tasteful, sophisticated people are the most deserving. That's what the White Glove Society is all about."
    (Mortimer's dialogue)
  8. The Courier: "Is there any way I could talk to the investigator?"
Marjorie: "Why yes, I think so. If he hasn't checked out yet, that is. I had our maitre d', Mortimer, offer him a complimentary room for as long as it took for him to be satisfied. You see? The White Glove Society remains the very picture of courtesy, even in the face of such impolite accusations. We have nothing to hide here."
    (Marjorie's dialogue)
  9. The Courier: "What business did you have here at the hotel?"
Heck Gunderson: "That's between me and the White Glove Society. But let's just say they control the food supply around here, and I got lots of food to give, but that ain't as welcome as you might think."
    (Heck Gunderson's dialogue)
  10. The Courier:"Sure, here you go."
Rotface:"There was a rumor a while back that the White Glove Society was really an all-ghoul gang, which is why they wear those weird masks of theirs. What do you think, would I look good in a mask? Maybe I'd make more caps..."
    (Rotface's dialogue)
  11. The Courier:"Why is everyone around here dressed up and wearing masks?"
Chauncey:"Those are all members of the White Glove Society. Our founder, Marjorie, gave us all a dress code. There's only one rule to it. In her words, we must dress in such a way that no one can be said to have dressed better than us. As for the masks, I'm not allowed to tell you. We're sworn to secrecy. Actually that's not true. That's just what we're supposed to say. I think Marjorie likes them for the mystery they create. And the way they make it clear that we're different from everyone else. But you didn't hear that from me."
    (Chauncey's dialogue)
  12. Billy Knight:"I had dinner at the Ultra-Luxe the other night. I told them my steak tasted funny. They said it was a clown. I ate a person!"
    (Billy Knight's dialogue)
  13. The Courier: "I've heard your group dines on human flesh."
Mortimer: "Ah, yes, I've heard that one too. Jealous people say such nasty things. I feel sorry for them."
The Courier: "I, too, know what it is to feel the Craving. How can I support your cause?"
Mortimer: "Good. Then you know what it is to be discreet in matters of... nutrition. Perhaps you can help me."
    (Mortimer's dialogue)
  14. The Courier: "I've heard your group dines on human flesh."
Mortimer: "Ah, yes, I've heard that one too. Jealous people say such nasty things. I feel sorry for them."
The Courier: "<Lie> I, too, know what it is to feel the Craving. How can I support your cause?"
    Mortimer:"[SUCCEEDED] Good. Then you know what it is to be discreet in matters of... nutrition. Perhaps you can help me."}}
    (Mortimer's dialogue)

  1. Fallout: New Vegas Official Game Guide Collector's Edition p.42: "Freeside"
"Las Vegas wasn't heavily damaged during the Great War, but people didn't immediately "settle" into the remnants of the old city. The various Vault tribes that emerged years later, hunted and fought among the ruins, but it was not until the "return" of Mr. House that they ceased (most) of their hostilities. Mr House directed the tribes to use his sizable quantities of pre-war construction materials to build the crude (but effective) outer walls that separate The Strip and Freeside from the rest of New Vegas. While Mr. House valued the area around Fremont Street, he ultimately viewed it as secondary in importance to the Strip itself and he had a second, inner wall that separated the two areas. When NCR prospectors (and eventually the army) arrived in the region, people typically went straight for The Strip, leaving Freeside (as it had become known by locals) as an informal stopping point. Eventually Mr. House recognized that he could use Freeside as a filter for undesirables, and pulled his favored tribes and all Securitrons into the Strip, leaving Freeside to fend for itself."

The Ultra-Luxe is an establishment of ineradicable refinement that delicately conceals its operators' more questionable tendencies.
