Wait, Isn’t World Nomads a Travel Insurance Provider?

Yes, but while travel insurance is our business, traveling responsibly and giving back is part of our ethos.

  • It’s why we’ve raised more than AUD$3.7 millionto support more than 260 global community projects through our Footprints foundation. This micro-donation program allows our customers to support community projects that resonate with them, with World Nomads covering all administrative costs.
  • It’s why we run travel and content creation scholarships – to provide the next generation of content creators with the skills and mentoring they need to kickstart their careers and broaden their life experience. Since 2014, we have awarded scholarships to more than 50 aspiring writers, photographers, filmmakers and content creators.
  • And it’s why we’ve created Travel Wiser, to ensure our travellers are best prepared for their adventures ahead and to stay safe, happy and healthy on the road. Our website also contains country-by-country and general safety advice, along with a free downloadable responsible travel guide to assist travellers who make responsible and ethical travel decisions.

World Nomads has seen claims for monkey bites, motorcycle accidents and mountain biking injuries in remote forests, so we include tips on everything from staying hydrated in extreme weather and avoiding bears in the wilderness to what should be in your emergency kit.

Travel Wiser is not just for the adventurous traveller, but for any traveller seeking ways to stay healthy and balanced on their vacations. Travel Wiser includes wellness content for travellers, including tips for combatting altitude sickness and ways to beat loneliness on a solo trip.

Why Travel Insurance Is a Smart Idea for Your Next Adventure

We know OWAA members like to get active in the great outdoors, from hiking and biking to fishing, rafting and snowboarding. And while many adventures go off without a hitch, accidents and illnesses happen.

In our 20 years in business, we’ve seen trips and falls, accidents, broken limbs, and more bouts of gastroenteritis than we can count. Our nomads have cancelled trips due to last-minute accidents and injuries, close family deaths and personal illness. And don’t forget about baggage and gear. We’ve seen broken skis come off airline conveyer belts, misdirected bags and our fair share of bag and phone thefts.

If you’re heading out to write a story or go on your own trip, you’ll want to know that you’re covered while participating in all the activities you plan to do. World Nomads covers more than 200 adventure activities, sports, work and volunteer experiences for U.S. and Canadian residents. That includes rock climbing, horse-riding and scuba diving and more adventure things like skydiving, parasailing and even shark cage diving.

Be sure to read your policy wording and our activities list for more details, as some extreme activities like space or deep-sea travel are excluded.

How Do I Choose a Travel Insurance Plan?

World Nomads offers two plans,Standard and Explorer. Each has different limits and sub-limits of coverage.

For our U.S. nomads, we offer coverage when traveling more than 100 miles from your home. Our Explorer plan includes everything in the Standard plan, plus additional activities and coverage limits.

For our Canadian nomads, we offer coverage when traveling out of province. You’ll list all the activities you plan to participate in when you buy your policy. Level 1 activities are automatically included, and you’ll pay a premium for the more adventurous Level 2 and 3 activities.

Whatever your country of residence, when you get a quote, you can compare the two plans side-by-side and choose the one that works best for you.

What Does Travel Insurance Cover?

Travel insurance can be grouped into three main areas of coverage: your investment, your health, and your stuff.

Trip Cancellation, Interruption and Delay– if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason like an unexpected illness or injury, you can claim for your unused, prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs like hotels, flights, cruises and tours.

Emergency Medical, Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation –if you get sick or injured on your trip, you can claim for the emergency medical expenses your primary health insurance doesn’t cover. That might include a doctor’s visit, prescription and even a hospital stay. If you’re injured in the middle of nowhere, emergency evacuation can get you to an appropriate medical facility, even if far away. And if your condition warrants it, repatriation coverage can bring you home.

Delayed, Lost, Stolen or Damaged baggage and gear– airlines lose and damage luggage, and thieves target tourist areas. Baggage delay coverage can help by providing reimbursem*nt for the clothes and toiletries you needed to tide you over until you are reunited with your wayward bag. Baggage and personal effects coverage can provide reimbursem*nt to replace your belongings if they disappear forever.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance teamcanhelp you find an English-speaking medical facility, provide guidance in a travel crisis, and even arrange travel back home in an emergency.
