WW Purple Plan Ultimate Guide - Recipes, Tips, & Meal Plans The Holy Mess (1)

What is the MyWW Purple Plan?

In 2019, Weight Watchers introduced the MyWW Plan which gives members the option to choose from the Green, Blue and Purple plans for more personalization of your path to weight loss success.

The Purple plan allows the lowest amount of daily points (for many people, 16), but the highest amount of zero point foods with a list of 300 to choose from.

The Purple plan is unique from the other WW plans in that members can have whole grains, popcorn, and potatoes as zero point foods.

Weight Watchers has stated that all 3 plans to equally proven to lead to weight loss, so choosing the Purple plan is really a matter of personal preference, the foods you eat, and your lifestyle.

Is the MyWW Purple Plan Right for You?

When you join Weight Watchers, you will be guided through an assessment to choose the plan that is best for you.

Keep in mind that you can change your food plan at any time but using the gear icon in the top right corner of your app. WW recommends that you give each plan at least 2 weeks before deciding if it’s not right for you.

The Weight Watchers Purple plan is similar to a previous plan called Simply Filling and also has similarities to the Fat & Fiber plan before it. The idea is to find satisfaction from foods high in fiber and low in unhealthy fat, which naturally leads to eating fewer calories.

Here are some reasons why the Purple plan might be good for you.

  • You eat mostly food prepared at home.
  • Your body functions better with more carbs.
  • You enjoy carbs but are not tempted to overeat them.
  • You were a WW Member in the past and liked Simply Filling or Core.
  • You want more zero point foods and less daily points.
  • You hate tracking.
  • You eat mostly whole, real foods.

If you are vegan, vegetarian, or are moving toward a primarily plant-based diet, the Purple plan can be a good option for you because beans, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and tofu are all zero points.

100 Pound Weight Loss Before and After

For the last 15 years, I’ve been maintaining a 100 pound weight loss. I believe in the Weight Watchers program because it works. While weight loss isn’t easy, it’s totally possible and it’s worth the sacrifice.

Although I mostly follow the WW Blue (formerly Freestyle) plan most of the time, last month I spent several months following Purple to give it a try.

Here are some WW purple tips I learned.

  • Purple is great to encourage whole, real foods. I found myself turning to plain, non-fat yogurt sweetened with berries or fat free cottage cheese instead of snack foods in the afternoons.
  • Enjoy those whole grains. I enjoyed oatmeal in the mornings for breakfast or even a bedtime snack, had whole wheat pasta for dinner, and enjoyed brown rice with stir fry.
  • Potatoes are a great meal option on Purple. Once a week I cooked a batch of red or sweet potatoes in my air fryer and then used them throughout the week as a filler for meals.
  • Air-popped popcorn is a wonderful treat on Purple. This popcorn spray and popcorn seasoning are great additions.
  • Plan ahead for going out to eat. Because daily points are limited, eating out on Purple could prove to be a challenge. Plan ahead before you go to fast food or restaurants so you know what options are available to you, and remember that you can always use your weekly flex points.

Should I Switch to the Purple Plan?

If you are currently using Green or Blue and considering a switch, there’s no reason not to try the Purple plan. Sometimes it’s good to shake things up, especially if you are stuck on a weight loss plateau.

Plan to give it a few weeks to see if Purple is right fit for you. Also, plan to spend some extra time exploring new recipes and foods.

Be sure to check out our WW Purple Meal Plan (with free PDF printable) as a way to get started.

Here are some reasons why you might want to change to the Purple plan.

  • You need a change of pace.
  • You are trying to break out of a plateau.
  • You want the motivation to try new foods.
  • You would enjoy the freedom of tracking less.
  • A change would help you get a fresh start.
  • You believe you would be more satisfied eating more whole grains and would not overeat them.

How to Lose Weight on Purple Plan

Weight loss only happens one way and that’s eating fewer calories than you burn.

The Purple plan is a bit of a modification but really not so different from the Green and Blue plans. You can eat most (or even all) of the same foods if that is your preference, but I think you’ll find you enjoy trying different foods on Purple.

The key to success with the Purple plan is learning to fill up on zero point foods without overeating them. While this is a tricky balance for many of us, you can do it.

Give yourself grace that it will take time to make this adjustment and there will be circ*mstances where you do overindulge. That’s okay. Allow the scale to be your guide.

Many people find that they lose weight on the purple plan because instead of eating processed foods, they are relying on whole grains like oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, and air-popped popcorn to keep them satisfied. These foods are filling because they have volume and fiber.

What Do Purple Plan Members Eat on Weight Watchers?

Remember that no food is off limits on the WW program. You can eat anything you want in moderation and count the points accordingly. You have weekly flex points to spend, as well.

Be sure to include fruits and vegetables in every meal because they are filling, nutritious, and satisfying.

Next, add a protein to your plate. Lean proteins are either zero points (for chicken breast, non-fat plain Greek yogurt) or low in points (lean ground beef, lean pork).

Then, add whole grains and healthy fats.

Finally, enjoy some splurges when you have the points available. Make your program enjoyable and realistic so you stick with it long term. (We all need a pizza night or some ice cream once in awhile.)

What Foods are Free on WW purple?

Get a complete list of the 300 zero point foods on Purple by clicking here.

The following foods are zero points on Purple:

  • All vegetables
  • All fruits
  • Lean proteins like plain, non-fat yogurt, chicken breast, and ground chicken breast
  • Potatoes
  • Corn
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • Whole wheat pasta
  • Brown rice

Note that there are no true “free” foods because all food has calories. You don’t have to track points for zero point foods, but your body is still consuming calories. Enjoy these foods in moderation and stop when you are full.

How Many Points Do I Get on WW Purple Plan?

Your daily points allowance and weekly flex points will be determined by the WW app and will vary based on your current weight, age, gender, and height.

The least amount of daily points anyone will get on MyWW Purple is 16 (compared to 23 on Blue and 30 on Green).
