Yogurt for Breakfast: 10 Healthy and Tasty Ideas (2024)

Greek yogurt is a great ally at breakfast because it’s healthy, light, nutritious, and super versatile. In fact, most nutritionists recommend making it part of a balanced diet, since it’s also low in sugar and fats (if you choose the fat-free variety, that is). Not everyone likes it, though, due to its slightly acidic taste.

That’s why we’ve got 10 original ideas for serving it, in recipes both sweet and savory!

1. Greek yogurt and granola bowl

Even in Italian, we use the word ‘bowl’ for this recipe – the classic combination of granola, yogurt, and fresh fruit. On its own, the bowl serves as a full meal and it’s a great way to start the day. Not to mention its rich flavor or how pretty it is just to look at!

The base is made from greek yogurt, to which you can add either fresh or dried fruit, seeds, or even a little extra sweetener if the fruit isn’t enough for you! Honey or maple syrup is ideal – or perhaps some almond or peanut butter, which are not exactly sweet, but they do give a particularly delicious flavor to the bowl.

2. Oatmeal

We’ve covered it many times by now, so you probably know how many different varieties of oatmeal are out there already. There’s the classic oatmeal that cooks for a few minutes. And then there are the overnight oats that pretty much make themselves by resting in the fridge overnight. But either way, the result is more or less the same. Our advice? Add a spoonful of greek yogurt to make it even creamier. Make the base with water and oatmeal. Then add the yogurt for additional protein and texture!

3. Chia pudding

Chia pudding, if you’re unfamiliar, is a delicate light pudding that’s very easy to make since no cooking is necessary. Just like with oatmeal, we suggest making the base from skim milk or water, greek yogurt, and fruit. To make it special, alternate layers of pudding with layers of yogurt inside glass serving cups.

4. Greek yogurt and granola

It might be nothing special if the granola is pre-packaged from the supermarket, but have you ever tried making homemade granola? It's super easy and you can use your favorite ingredients like dried fruit or nuts, all kinds of granola, honey, maple syrup, coconut flakes, or chocolate chips. The list goes on and on!

5. Yogurt cake

A breakfast classic? Our healthy, light cake recipe – that the whole family will love!

To make what we like to call the Seven Jar cake made using a 175 g greek yogurt jar for serving (even though the classic recipe uses the 125 g regular white yogurt jar).

Try it with greek yogurt and you’ll definitely taste the difference! With apples, it’s even more delicious (and seasonal), but you can use all the fruit you want or even just chocolate chips!

6. French toast

French toast is made with two bread slices that are filled with jam like a sandwich, then breaded in the beaten egg with milk. Brown the breaded toast slices in a pan with butter. This one is a real delight! Serve with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, a spoonful of yogurt, and fresh fruit. Or use the yogurt as the filling!

7. Yogurt bruschetta

Also about sandwiches and sandwiches, we can not fail to mention the sweet bruschetta. A breakfast, or even a snack, to be composed in many ways. The base is toasted bread spread with yogurt and then you can complete it with jam or fruit. Excellent also in the savory version with avocado, cherry tomatoes, and salmon.

8. Pancakes

Pancakes can be made with yogurt in the batter or just with yogurt as an accompaniment! We suggest the latter because it’s always better to consume natural greek yogurt fresh. So – make classic pancakes and stack them. Serve with a delicious cream made from mixing Greek yogurt with honey or maple syrup. Complete with fresh fruit or slightly caramelize the fruit before serving.

9. Instant donuts

These aren’t the donuts you’re used to – they’re made in just a few minutes with only two ingredients. We’re talking about instant donuts! Just mix 140 g self-rising flour with 190 g greek yogurt and you're done. This dough is ready in an instant and doesn’t need to rise.

Use it to make small or large donuts or delicious donut holes to fry in boiling oil and then dust with powdered sugar. You’ve gotta try it to believe it!

10. Magic yogurt focaccia

Another super clever recipe is yogurt focaccia, which is also made with the same ingredients as above: self-rising flour and yogurt. Obviously, if you don't have self-rising flour, use type “00” flour with two teaspoons of instant yeast to create a homemade self-rising flour.

The measurements are the same as for the donuts, but this time, the dough should be spread on a well-oiled pizza pan using wet hands. After a drizzle of oil on the surface and a pinch of salt, bake the focaccia in a static oven at 355°F (180°C) for 20 minutes or until the surface is golden brown.

You can also make yogurt focaccia in the sweet version by adding sugar and accompanying the focaccia with fresh yogurt and jam.
