How to Find Your Device MAC Address - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University (2024)
A MAC (Media Access Control) address, sometimes referred to as a hardwareorphysicaladdress, is a unique, 12-character alphanumeric attribute that is used to identify individual electronic devices on a network. An example of a MAC address is: 00-B0-D0-63-C2-26.
Note:Many devices have multiple MAC addresses, so consider your device and whether you'll be connecting via an ethernet cable (wired) or over a wi-fi network (wireless) before selecting yours.
You will need to find your device’s MAC address to connect to the CMU-DEVICE and wired networks. Once you find your MAC address, learn how to connect below:
On your iOS device, tap Settings and choose the CMU-DEVICE wireless network. Make note of the value in the Wi-Fi Address field. This is your MAC address for the selected Wi-Fi network. Visit the Device Registration tool.
Click on the Windows logo (the Start Menu) in the bottom left corner. In the search box, type cmd and press enter. In the command prompt, type getmac and press enter/return. The Physical Address will be your MAC address.
On your Apple device, go to the device Settings by clicking on the Settings icon. In Settings, click on the General tab. In General section, Click the About tab. In the About section, the MAC Address or Physical Address is displayed in the Wi-Fi Address box.
Open the Apple menu and click System Settings. Click Network in the left panel and then select Wi-Fi or Ethernet (for wired connections). Click Details next to the network you're connected to. Scroll down to see your Mac's local IP address.
Open the command prompt by doing one of the following: At the Start menu, enter cmd and press Enter to bring up the command Prompt. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Sharing. View your computer's local hostname at the bottom of the window.
Go to the Apple menu > System Settings > Network. Click on the wired network device you plan on using, then click Details. Click on the Hardware label in the left column. The MAC address will be on the right.
Browse to any web page; you will be redirected to the guest wireless service page. Event access code is VBMXEUWF. again if there is a 4-hour lull in your use of the wireless connection. If your wireless connection to CMU-GUEST times out, re-enter your email address and access code to re-connect.
By default, your device improves privacy by using a different MAC address for each Wi-Fi network. This unique MAC address is your device's private Wi-Fi address, which it uses for that network only.
Every network interface has a MAC address (Media Access Controller) also known as the physical address. This is the actual hardware address that the lowest level of the network uses to communicate.
