Uganda's political landscape is about to get a bit more interesting! Moses Muhangi, the current President of the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF), has traded in his gloves for a shot at representing Kampala Central in the 2026 parliamentary race. He's stepping into the arena as an independent candidate, a move that's already generating buzz. But can a sports leader successfully transition to the world of politics?
Muhangi's decision to run without the backing of a political party is rooted in his vision of unity. He believes that the issues facing Ugandans transcend political divides. "The problems we face don't care about your party affiliation, religion, or tribe," he stated, emphasizing his desire to foster a sense of collective progress. This is the time to unite and strive for a shared victory as Ugandans. This is a bold statement, but can it resonate with voters?
He's aiming to fill the shoes of the current MP, Muhammad Nsereko, who has held the seat since 2011. Muhangi's experience as a lawyer and former KCCA councillor gives him a foundation in local governance.
Since taking the helm of the UBF in 2018, Muhangi has been credited with revitalizing boxing in Uganda. He's focused on grassroots development, securing corporate partnerships, and increasing the visibility of local boxers. This track record has earned him considerable support from the sports community, who see his political ambitions as a natural extension of his leadership. This could be a significant advantage in the race.
His campaign launch is planned for Kamwokya, the Kampala suburb where he grew up, followed by Kololo. He's counting on his strong connections with youth, athletes, and entertainers to rally support across the division. This grassroots approach could be key to his success.

Muhangi's manifesto focuses on empowering Kampala residents through concrete programs and reforms. Here's a glimpse:

The Competition
Muhangi faces a tough race. His rivals include Lewis Rubongoya from the National Unity Platform (NUP), who is also the party's Secretary-General, and Minsa Kabanda from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who is also the current Minister for Kampala. Other candidates in the race include Abraham Luzzi and Suzan Kushaba.
But here's where it gets controversial... Running as an independent can be an uphill battle. Without the resources and support of a major political party, Muhangi will need to rely heavily on his personal brand and grassroots efforts to win over voters.
