I have seen several stories of spouses hiding financial transactions from each other. There was one lady who woke up to a bank possessing their home in Kyanja. Apparently, the hubby got a mortgage on the house to invest in a deal which went sideways. Another husband was shocked to learn that he had been paying rent for the family home to a mysterious landlord who happened to be his loving wife! Another man died and left several properties which the wife had no idea existed! We have also seen rich tycoons murdered with spouses as primary suspects! Such stories are so common that it is scary.
However, being open and transparent about finances with your spouse is generally recommended for a healthy and successful relationship. Here's why:
1. Trust and transparency: Sharing financial information fosters trust and transparency in your relationship. It allows both partners to understand each other's financial situation, goals, and priorities.
2. Joint financial decisions: When both partners are aware of the household's financial situation, they can make informed decisions together. This includes budgeting, saving, investing, and planning for the future.

3. Financial goals alignment: Discussing finances helps ensure that you're both on the same page regarding your financial goals and priorities. It allows you to work together towards common objectives, such as buying a home, saving for retirement, or paying off debt.
4. Financial stability: Being aware of each other's financial obligations and resources can help prevent financial surprises or conflicts down the line. It enables you to plan and manage finances more effectively as a team.
5. Emergency preparedness: In the event of an unexpected financial emergency, having open communication about finances allows you to work together to find solutions and support each other through challenging times.
However, it's essential to approach these discussions with sensitivity and respect for each other's privacy and comfort levels. It's okay to start with small steps and gradually increase the level of financial disclosure over time. Additionally, if there are any concerns or disagreements about finances, consider seeking guidance from a financial advisor or counselor to facilitate productive conversations. Ultimately, open communication and mutual trust are key to a strong financial partnership with your spouse.
