Apesar de já ter ficado noiva várias vezes, Jô Penteado sempre acaba o noivado com seus pretendentes, o que lhe rende a alcunha de Lucrécia Bórgia. Rafael é seu oitavo noivo e todos esperam que, enfim, aconteça o casamento. Só que Jô, mais uma vez, percebendo que não ama o noivo, termina mais um noivado. Jô sofre por nunca ter se apaixonado verdadeiramente e não conhecer o amor. Até que ela se apaixona loucamente pelo professor Fábio, viúvo e pai de dois filhos. Os dois se conhecem ao irem juntos para uma excursão. A lancha que os transportava quebra e eles ficam numa ilha deserta por dois meses, sendo dados como mortos. O romance de Jô e Fábio é atrapalhado por Gláucia, a invejosa irmã de Jô, e por Paula, até então noiva de Fábio.
